Al Taplet is a lovely man, full of laughter, a real pleasure. He is a shoeshine man from New Orleans and on the side began painting his signs to sell shines until his art was discovered over ten years ago. The signs range in size from 9" x 14" to about 11" x 15". These are pieces of slate and have been subject to the wear and tear of Al's toting them all over town in his bicycle basket. Big Al is listed in the Rosenak reference book Contemporary American Folk Art, A Collector's Guide as well as the book Self Taught, Outsider and Folk Art by Betty-Carol Sellen. A living artist doing what he loves best!
